The Kawarau River Run is a Half Marathon (21.1km) trail running event that starts near to the Kawarau Bridge Bungy Centre in Gibbston Valley and follows the Kawarau River Trail all the way to the finish line at the Remarkables Park Town Centre in Frankton near Queenstown. A 10km and 5km out and back trail run and walk are also available on the day – Something for everyone!
Whilst running or walking along the beautiful cycling and walking trail you’ll be surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery whilst enjoying fantastic views of the river amongst lush native bush.
Queenstown – known as the adventure capital of the world is nestled amongst majestic mountain ranges alongside Lake Wakatipu only 6km from the Queenstown International Airport. The airport is conveniently located less than 1km from the Event HQ at the Remarkables Town Centre.

EVENT LOCATION / VENUE:
The Half Marathon Trail Run & Walk starts near to the Kawarau Bridge Bungy Centre in Gibbston Valley and finishes on private land next to the river trail at the end of Cherry Blossom Avenue near to the Remarkables Park Town Centre. Transport to the start line is included in the entry fee.
The 10km and 5km out and back Trail Runs & Walks both start and finish in a designated area on private land next to the river trail near to the Remarkables Park Town Centre and follow an out and back course.
REGISTRATIONS:
Online Registrations OPEN at 12:00pm (midday) on 11th December 2017
Online Registrations CLOSE at 12:00am Midnight on Thursday 12th April 2018.
On the day registrations will take place at the Event Hub near to the turn off for Cherry Blossom Avenue next to the Remarkables Park Town Centre on Saturday 14th April 2018 between 7:00am – 9:00am.
The event is limited to 200 participants so if you’re keen to take part – don’t delay – enter today!
A percentage of event entry fees will be donated to the Queenstown Tails Trust to support the awesome work they do in developing and maintaining trails in the region for all the family to enjoy.
Event branded merchandise must be ordered before 12:00am midnight on Sunday 1st April 2018.
EVENT REFUND POLICY:
In the unfortunate circumstances a participant must withdraw from an event due to illness or injury they will NOT be eligible for a refund – however race entries can be transferred to another person or to the following race year.
RACE BRIEFINGS:
Briefings will take place on their respective start lines approx 15mins before the start.
RACE NUMBERS & RACE PACKS:
If you are taking part in the Half Marathon event you must collect your race numbers & race packs between 7:00am – 7:45am on on Saturday 14th April 2018 at the Event Hub by the turn off for Cherry Blossom Avenue next to the Remarkables Park Town Centre before walking a short distance to meet the bus to take you to to the start of the event.
If you are taking part in the 10km or 5km events you must collect your race numbers & race packs between 7:00am – 9:00am on on Saturday 14th April 2018 at the Event Hub near to the turn off for Cherry Blossom Avenue next to the Remarkables Park Town Centre.
*Please ensure you race number is visibly attached to your front using safety pins provided and your transponder attached to your left ankle. Failure to return your transponder at the finish line will result in a $50 fine.
Drop Bags – A gear bag and tag will be issued to you a the time of check in and will be transported from the start line – finish line after the race has started.
CUT OFF TIMES:
There are NO cut off times for any of the events.
EVENT TRANSPORT
*Half Marathon Only – You CANNOT drive your own vehicle or be dropped off at the start line at the Kawarau Bridge Bungy Centre in Gibbston Valley. Transport has been organised for you and included in your event entry fee.
A designated car parking area near to the finish line by the turn off for Cherry Blossom Avenue next to the Remarkables Park Town Centre will be available for all participants to use on the day of the event for a small fee.
For those taking part in the half marathon event – you will only need to walk a short distance from the car park to bus stop before starting your twenty minute journey to the start at the Kawarau Bridge Bungy Centre in Gibbston Valley.

CAR PARKING:
There will be designated car parking facilities near to the start and finish line next to the Remarkables Park Town Centre … There will be a small fee to park in the designated area. Please follow the directional arrows and marshals instructions on event day.
WEATHER & CONTINGENCY:
The weather in April is generally quite warm with temperatures ranging between twelve and eighteen degrees Celsius with light winds. At the same time with the event taking place in an alpine environment the weather can also change at any time.
In the event of bad weather the event will be postponed until the weather is more favourable on the event day or the following day. In the unfortunate circumstances the event has to be cancelled race entries will NOT be refunded however registered participants will be able to register for the following years event at a 50% discounted rate.
DRINK STATIONS:
Participants are responsible to carry their own food and hydration for the duration of the event – however water and sports beans will be readily available at checkpoints located approx every 5KM along the course.
CHANGING FACILITIES & TOILETS:
All amenities will be available near to the Event HQ and at the Remarkables Park Town Centre.
PRIZE GIVING:
The awards ceremony will take place at approx 12:00pm midday near to the event finish line. To be eligible for category and spot prizes participants must be present at the prize giving to claim their prize.
REFRESHMENTS:
The Event Hub is located only 200m from the Remarkables Park Town Centre where there is an abundance of cafeterias, restaurants and shops.
MASSAGE & PHYSIO:
A team of professional physiotherapists and massage therapists will be set up at the Event Hub to ease away any aches and pains after your adventure.
FIRST AID:
In the unlikely event of an emergency, first aiders will be located around the course and at the START / FINISH. Qualified personnel will be assessing participants during the race to make sure that everyone is in a fit and good physical condition to continue.
RACE WITHDRAWL:
In the unfortunate situation a participant must withdraw from the event you must inform the nearest checkpoint staff and wait with them until the last participant passes the checkpoint and then be escorted – transported to the finish line accordingly.
ACCIDENT REPORTING:
In the unfortunate circumstances a participant has an accident during the race – please (if you can) make your way to the nearest checkpoint and notify the first aid staff. If a participant cannot make it to the next checkpoint as a result of injury – the participant must stay in the area of cause of injury and does not deviate from the course whilst also use their recommended gear as required whilst also notifying other participants of their injury for them to in turn notify the next checkpoint staff. Whilst waiting for assistance the participant must stay in the location where they obtained their injury and the first aid team will come to them.
Should another participant assist another injured runner; they are to take note of the time spent assisting the injured person and this time will be deducted from their overall time upon notification at the finish line.
INSURANCE:
It is recommended that participants travelling from overseas obtain appropriate travel insurance taking in to consideration they are taking part in a sporting event in the event of a medical emergency.
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT:
A certified traffic management professional will support the event to ensure the safety of all participants and all those involved with the success of the event. Please comply with all their requirements and guidelines on the day…
OFFICIALS:
All participants are to follow and obey the instructions of the race officials and follow the Red arrow markers and directional signs along the course.
WASTE:
Please make sure that anything you take on to the course that needs to be disposed of after use is disposed of in the rubbish bins provided at the checkpoints and at the finish line. LITTERING WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.

This beautiful trail run and walk starts near to the Kawarau Bridge Bungy Centre and follows the river trail all the way to the finish line near to the Remarkables Park Town Centre in Frankton near Queenstown.
The well formed cycling and walking trail is moderately undulating and crosses a swing bridge approx 5km in to the course and the historic old lower Shotover Bridge at the 15km mark along the course.
Both the 10km and 5km out and back courses start and finish next to the Kawarau River at the end of Cherry Blossom venue close to the Remarkables Park Town Centre in Frankton near Queenstown. Even though the shorter distances follow out and back courses the view in each direction is surprisingly different – you’ll see!
You’ll be treated to fantastic mountain and river views together with some small waterfalls amongst native bush along your journey. Fun times!
