The Aoraki Mount Cook Classic 100km & 50km is a road cycling event held in early October each year in the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand.
The Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is in the South Island of New Zealand near the towns of Twizel and Lake Tekapo. Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain stands 3753 metres above sea level and the Aoraki Mount Cook village lie within the park. The park covers a little over 700 km²with Glaciers covering 40% of the park area, notably the Tasman Glacier on the slopes of Aoraki Mount Cook.
Both events in the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park encompass breath-taking scenery – cyclists an out and back course on the main Mount Cook Road that meanders its way amongst awe inspiring lake, mountain and glacial landscapes – quite possibly one of the world’s most scenic cycle races!

EVENT REFUND POLICY:
In the unfortunate circumstances a participant must withdraw from the Marathon event due to illness or injury they will NOT be eligible for a refund – however race entries can be transferred to another person or to the following race year.
If the event has to be cancelled as a result of severe weather conditions including heavy rain, hail, snow, wind or severe heat or reasons beyond control *NO REFUNDS will be allocated – however registered participants will be eligible to register for the following years event benefiting from a discounted 20% off registration fee.
Under special circumstances event race registrations may be transferred to another Active QT event.

RACE NUMBERS & RACE PACKS:
Race Numbers and Race Packs are to be collected on Saturday 6th October 2018 between 4:00pm – 8:00pm at the The Mt Cook Lodge / Chamois Bar & Grill, located in the Aoraki Mount Cook Village.
Race items can also be collected on race day after 7:00am up until 15mins prior to your respective race start time.
If traveling to the event on race day – please allow enough time for travel, park and walk to collect your race items and warm up without rushing… Save your energy for the race!
PRE EVENT DINNER BUFFET:
An optional pre event dinner buffet is available at the The Chamois Bar & Grill in the Aoraki Mount Cook Village between 5:30pm – 8:30pm on Saturday 6th October 2018. Additional Tickets for friends and family can also be pre purchased online at the time of registration at a special race rate of $30. Tickets will be contained within participant’s race packs. *(must be purchased at the time of online registration)
At the time of event registration – please select from the drop down menu – your preferred buffet dinner seating time on the eve of the race ie: 5:30pm, 6:30pm or 7:30pm.
Time Trial Bikes, Aero Bars or Disc Wheels are NOT allowed for either event
Spectator and support crew are not allowed to accompany cyclists during the race however spectators and support crew are permitted to watch the races from the Glentanner Park located approx half way in the 50km event and 23km / 77km along the 100km course
This is a draft legal event however if you are drafting please be careful and do your fair share of the work if you are riding in a bunch!
During the events – both race courses are OPEN to traffic. NORMAL ROAD RULES APPLY and all traffic laws are to be obeyed.
COMPULSORY & RECOMMENDED GEAR / CLOTHING:
All cyclists MUST wear a NZ Standards Approved bicycle helmet at all times during the event
All cyclists MUST carry a cycle pump, spare tube or tyre and appropriate tools / equipment
With the events taking place in an alpine environment we recommend that participants dress appropriately according to the weather ie: waterproof / windproof jacket, gloves
WEATHER / CONTINGENCY PLAN:
In the event of bad weather in particular a strong ‘Northerly’ wind, snow or heavy rain and flooding the event will be postponed until the weather is more favourable on race day. In the unfortunate circumstances the event has to be cancelled race entries will NOT be refunded however will be transferred to the following year.
A certified traffic management professional will support the event to ensure the safety of all participants and all those involved with the success of the event. Please comply with all their requirements and guidelines on the day…
All participants are to follow and obey the instructions of the race officials and follow the Red arrow markers along the course.
Participants are responsible to carry their own food and hydration for the duration of the event – however water and energy drinks will be readily available at the half way – turn around points.
CHANGING FACILITIES & TOILETS:
All amenities are available at the Hermitage Hotel in the Aoraki Mount Cook Village.
The Prize giving will take place approx 1:00pm on Race Day at the Mt Cook Lodge in the Aoraki Mount Cook Village.
There is plentiful car parking within the grounds of the Aoraki Mount Cook Village. Please look out for CAR PARKING signs and follow directions of Race Officials.
There is a plentiful variety of wholesome food and snacks as well as hot and cold drinks available at the race finish – Hermitage Hotel, Aoraki Mount Cook Village.
PHYSIO & MASSAGE:
Physio and Massage will be readily available *for a small charge to ease away any aches and pains after your accomplishment at the Finish Line – Hermitage Hotel, Aoraki Mount Cook Village.
In the unlikely event of an emergency, first aiders will be located around the course and at the START / FINISH. Qualified personnel will be assessing participants during the race to make sure that everyone is in a fit and good physical condition to continue.
In the unfortunate situation a participant must withdraw from the event you must inform the nearest checkpoint staff and wait with them until the last participant passes the checkpoint and then be escorted – transported to the finish line accordingly.
In the unfortunate circumstances a participant has an accident during the race – please (if you can) make your way to the nearest checkpoint and notify the first aid staff. If a participant cannot make it to the next checkpoint as a result of injury – the participant must stay in the area of cause of injury and does not deviate from the course whilst also use their recommended gear as required whilst also notifying other participants of their injury for them to in turn notify the next checkpoint staff. Whilst waiting for assistance the participant must stay in the location where they obtained their injury and the first aid team will come to them.
Should another participant assist another injured cyclist; they are to take note of the time spent assisting the injured person and this time will be deducted from their overall time upon notification at the finish line.
It is recommended that participants traveling from overseas obtain appropriate travel insurance taking in to consideration they are taking part in a sporting event in the event of a medical emergency.

With all events taking place on the road – music / headphones are NOT allowed during the event for obvious safety reasons.
With the nature of the event taking place in the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park – DOGS are NOT allowed.
The Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is one of the most beautiful places on earth and we want it to stay this way. Please dispose of any waste in the rubbish bins provided at checkpoint s throughout the race and at the start / finish area. Should any cyclist be caught littering in the park they will instantly be disqualified. Likewise should a support crew member be caught littering – they will be reported and their cyclist will also be instantly disqualified.
EVENT COURES / MAPS:
Both events start and finish at the The Mt Cook Lodge and follow an out and back course that meanders alongside Lake Pukaki with stunning mountain views.
Both courses – open to traffic are moderately undulating and every now and again cyclists may have to get off their seats however there are a handful of awesome longer descents to look forward to on the ride…
